10 Keys To Selecting A Trainer
- Establish goals-
Think about what you want to accomplish and what you want your horse to accomplish. Clearly outline your goals and discuss them with your potential trainer.
Expect the trainer to spend time evaluating your horse to determine whether or not the horse can meet the goals you
have in mind. A trainer and owner have to decide if the horse is worth the owner’s
money investment and the trainer’s time.
- Prioritize –
List the traits you’d like to see in a trainer, - honesty, work ethic, ability, compassion for the horse
and a proven performance record might be on your list. Which traits are most
important to you?
- Take Your Time –
Don’t expect your search for the perfect trainer to be quick or easy.
Be patient. It’s easier to find a showman than it is to find a horseman.
- Network –
Get advice and referrals from other people. Talk to other horse
owners and find which trainers have worked well for them. Ask questions, “Is
the trainer fair?” “Does he/she work hard?” “Do you get your money’s worth?” “Did
you get the results you anticipated?”
- Inspect Facilities –
Don’t be shy about checking a trainer’s stable for cleanliness, safety, and facility resources. Check the horses water and feed, the condition of tack and the health and condition
of other horses stabled there.
- Meet The Team –
Get to know the people assisting your prospecting trainer. How
experienced are they? How dedicated are they?
Learn about the trainer’s veterinarian and farrier.
- Judge The Trainer’s Priorities –
Based on your conversations and input from trusted contacts, who would you say the trainer put first, himself
or the horse?
- Check Your Comfort Level –
You should be comfortable spending time and talking to your trainer.
- Watch The Trainer Ride –
It only makes sense to see your trainer in action. Look at how
he/she rides horses for other people, observe their riding style, their training and disciplinary technique.
- Go With Your Gut –
Trust your instincts. You have to be comfortable with “The Big
Picture”.
